Lightship History by "Hull" number...

Brief Explanation of United States Lightship Hull Designations, by: Jay McCarthy

LVLight Vessel... Hull Designation used by United States Lighthouse Service until 1939.

WAL = W-US Coast Guard - Anchored - Light... Hull Designation used by USCG after the USCG took over the duties of the USLHS in 1939.

Note: all existing Lightships retained their LV designation, but had WAL added.

Example; Relief Lightship (built in 1904) was designated LV-78 (USLHS) / WAL-505 (USCG), in 1939. I believe both Hull Designations were used for Historical Data purposes.

WLV = W-US Coast Guard - Light - Vessel... Hull Designation used by USCG for Lightships built after 1939 were designated WLV only. They were not part of the early USLHS.

Those Hulls Designated by LV only, were no longer in service when the USCG took over the duties of the USLHS in 1939.
