Storm of AUGUST 23/24 1893

THE RELIEF LIGHTSHIP ON FIVE FATHOM STATION

During a huge storm that may have been a hurricane, the Relief Lightship took four successive seas to the port side and began to sink. Four men were washed over the side ; the pilot boat picked up two men. The ship capsized and sank at 0147 on August 24, 1893. No names given .

Cross Rip Lightship

6 crewmen lost when  pack ice tore the Lightship from its mooring on 4 February 1918

 during one of the coldest Winters in modern history .

Dragged off station in moving ice February 4, 1918, last seen moving out the eastern entrance of Nantucket Sound; lost with all hands. LV 6 was last seen by Head Keeper Wm Grieder of Great Point Lighthouse , Nantucket Island , Massachusetts , early morning , Feb.5 , 1918 .The USLHS Tender , Azalea went in search of the Lightship to no avail .

In the same freeze of Feb 1918 , 4 Lightships were stuck in the pack ice , 2 were able to steam out on their own power , 1 Lightship was towed free from the ice , but LV 6 was too far out in the ice for any rescue vessels to reach it . The Mate/Captain  , E.B. Phillips was ashore , unable to get to his vessel , so The First Mate , Henry F. Joy walked across 7 miles of sea ice to Nantucket Village to ask permission to abandon ship , but he was ordered by the local USLHS District Officer to return to his ship and maintain his station . The LV 6 was seen with its Ensign upside down , a sign of distress , when it was pulled out to sea with the ice floes on Feb 5 , 1918 .

LV 117

Nantucket Lightship

 Sunk 15 MAY 1934 

 Rammed and sunk by RMS Olympic of the White Star Lines , 48 miles south of Nantucket Island , Massachusetts , and 200 nautical miles East of New York City . Wreck located , Summer 1998 by a team of divers from the New England area , on Nantucket Shoals , in 1 piece . The ship is upright and listing to Starboard .

LV 73 /WAL 503

Vineyard Lightship 

Lost , September 14-15 , 1944 with 12 crewmen aboard , 1 1/2 miles SW of Cuttyhunk Island , Massachusetts .

LV 73 was last seen at the peak of the great hurricane early  in the morning of September 15 , 1944 , by Head Keeper , Octave Ponsart , of Cuttyhunk Lighthouse . His daughter , Seamond ( Ponsart ) Roberts , 5 years of age at that time , was in the lantern room at Cuttyhunk Lighthouse , helping her Father keep the light operating . 5 crewmen ( Relief Crew ) were ashore when the hurricane struck New England on September 14-15 , 1944 .  Of the 5 crewmen , only 1 remains , BMCS USN Retired , Harold Flagg . Harold was a USCG Coxswain at the time of the disaster .

 Buffalo Lightship

Lightship destroyed and sunk in storm of 10 NOVEMBER 1913

Lightship sunk and all hands lost off Waverly Point, Lake Erie, near BUFFALO, NY.

Relief Lightship

1913: July, while attempting to transfer mail to passing steamer CITY OF ATLANTA, the 5 lightship crewmen manning the whaleboat were drowned when run down by the steamer.
NO names of crewmen were provided.
