~

Lightship #116/538 Chesapeake (Restoration) (Off Site)

~

Nantucket  LV 112

Please see this page for more of the story!

Bob Mannino reports they have received their 501 © 3 determination as The UNITED STATES LIGHTSHIP MUSEUM, INC.

They have a reserved berth for the 112 centrally located in Boston Harbor. They have a website http://www.nantucketlightshiplv-112.org for more details.

While not yet the owners of The 112, they have now started paying the insurance payments of $750 per month. As a result of the economy turndown, they are in need of financial help as they are far from the seed funding goal of $175,000. They would like to move the ship from Long Island to Boston before the end of summer.

Barnegat

Thomas Carroll and Michael Lang reports plans are moving ahead to create a museum in Camden, NJ that will include the Barnegat, the USS Savannah ( first nuclear powered merchant ship ) and the Battleship New Jersey. The museum will include shore facilities that include a Seaman's Church constructed of stone brought back from the arctic by Admiral Byrd. The Barnegat has been under the personal care of Mr. Rodney Sadler, Harbormaster of Wiggins Park Marina for the past several years. Mr. Sadler has been the sole source of care and has personally saved the ship from deteriorating away. Their website is www.camdenshipmuseum.org.

Overfalls

The 118 has been returned to Lewes after a 1.2 million dollar restoration in Norfolk. The Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation has secured funding (stimulus money ) to build a permanent berth where it will not sit in mud of the canal in the future. Our congratulations to the OMMF, BRAVO ZULU on a huge job, well done!  June 30, 2010 it's almost done

Lightship #83 Swiftsure

Gene Ringo Reports; Wood for the deck has been ordered and is currently drying for the Swiftsure. A contract has been let for evaluation of the electrical system, with plans to open the ship for public tours. This is the oldest of any of our Lightships with the original steam power plant.
