Norman Pickett, BMC
Had all dents and
dings removed , extra Radio gear ect., Repaired all Mach. and departed for
Miami, Fl. after 30 days. Arrived Miami laid over for 4 days. Being from
Miami the Eng. crew covered for me the whole 4 days to visit family.
Departed Miami en-route Kingston ,Jamaica while in transit of Cuba had military air craft fly over's. On arrival Kingston spent 4 days for liberty and take on supplies. There are a few stories to be told about the liberties. Departed Kingston en-route Panama Canal. Moored Rodmen Navel Base for 4 days liberty and take on fresh water, food and other supplies. Took 2 days to get thru canel. After leaving the cancel we were en-route Acapulco, Mexico. Anchored in Harbor and ran liberty boats from 6 AM to midnight. stayed at anchor for 5 days. The stories I could tell. Left Mexico en-route LA, Calif. Had to bypass LA due to the big fires that year, Continued on to San Francisco and tied up at the Fisherman's Wharf among the fishing fleet. Stayed 4 days. Departed SF en-route Oregon, but CO decided to bypass Oregon and continued on to Seattle, Wa. Moored Seattle. Painted Umitila on each side and assumed Umitila Station after changing crews and taking on supplies (approx. 2 wks.) I was an EN and stayed onboard for approx 8-9 months and was transferred to the CGC White Bush in Astoria, Or.
There is much more to tell but I'll keep it all as memories. A trip of a lifetime.
Date's are hard to remember. I was told no Trip Sea Logs could be found.
