George Rongner
George served on the Buzzards Bay Station as CO of 86/511
1955-1957, was a Strong supporter
and
advocate of preserving Lightship Sailor History. He donated many artifacts
and pictures from his active
duty time, including his personal dress uniform.
He served with the Navy aboard the USS American
Legion and participated in the first wave in the invasion of Guadalcanal
in the South Pacific. For
his actions during that battle, George was awarded the
Bronze
Star.
George was the author of the book "Life Aboard a Coast Guard Lightship"
and a friend to all. Obituary
It has been said that George did not cross the bar, only received orders to a permanent duty station, [Feb 15, 2011]
